Units of Mass

The commonly used units to measure mass are kilogram and gram. Kilogram (kg) is the unit to measure the mass of bigger objects. Gram (g) is also a unit of mass but it measures smaller objects.

Relationship between kg and g.

1 kg = 1000 g

When you convert ‘g’ to ‘kg’, divide by 1000

 

Example i) Convert 250 g into kg

(When we convert gram into kilogram we have to divide by 1000.)

1kg = 1000 g

250 g =  ____ kg

 

           

        


                               

         

 250 g ÷ 1000 = 0.25

250 g ÷ 1000 = 0.25 kg

 

Example ii) Convert 2.5kg into g

(When you convert ‘kg’ into ‘g’, multiply by 1000)

= 2.5kg x 1000 g                         

= 2500 g

                                   Lesson Reflection for ICT blogger.

Among many online teachings I found this particular topic (Measurement of mass) bit tough for the students to explain, especially the conversion parts. This made me to understand that students are lacking division concept.

So, inoder to give clear concept I down loaded the video clip on this particular topic and shared with the students in class group chats along with my own created video clips too. Then I asked the students to redo the activities with some additional activities.

I also modified the activities because I found that the children facing difficulties especially division with decimals.

Example;

Convert 250 g into kg

(When we convert gram into kilogram we have to divide by 1000.)

1kg = 1000 g

250 g =  ____ kg

              0

250 g ÷ 1000 = 0.25

250 g ÷ 1000 = 0.25 kg

After solving some more activities the students could do better. But still students are not confident with conversion especially divisions with decimals. One reason could be in Class III the topic division is touched in brief and the most simplified manner without decimals. And another reason could be the online teaching. I assume that if it had been a face to face teaching both the teacher and students could perform better with some remedial classes.

I am more worried and wondering for the students with SIM. Before lockdown our school administration planned to make visits  students with SIM for face to face teaching in an identified place and location in consultation with local leaders as per the conveniences and safety of students and it was going so well with positive feedbacks from parents. But I am confident that we can do it once the situation comes into normal.
